My 2022 travel journalism research trip to Ecuador — working on a supplement for National Geographic Traveller — took me across the fascinating region of Imbabura. There, there are several crafts towns that warrant a one or two-day roadtrip. This piece was done in NGT’s beautifully illustrated “On The Trail” format, which I believe is no longer in the magazine. I do miss it.

In 2022, I travelled around Ecuador working on an Ecuador travel writing supplement for National Geographic Traveller UK. This was a new challenge for me as a freelance travel writer, as it required me to write half the magazine — 8,000 words — myself. For this narrative feature, I spent two days at Hacienda Zuleta, digging into the legacy of its indigenous people — and two former Ecuadorian presidents.

I visited Quito in November 2022 while working on an Ecuador travel writing supplement for National Geographic Traveller UK, exploring Ecuador's capital from the 16th-century Old Town to the bohemian La Floresta district. I covered the city's restaurants, markets, and nightlife, and checked out the street art scene. As an travel journalist specialising in Ecuador, I found that the mix of colonial architecture and contemporary culture made for compelling copy.

This was the first of several Czech Republic travel writing pieces I would work on in the coming months, beginning to cultivate my status as a specialist Czechia travel writer. As it was the 30th anniversary of the “Velvet Divorce” between Czechia and Slovakia, I decided to travel back to Brno, where the “divorce papers” were signed. I had personal motivation, too: I had lived with an ex-boyfriend there, and experienced my own “Brno breakup.” This Czechia trip forced me to confront the ghosts of my relationship — which was easier than expected, especially as it involved most excellent wine and cocktails.

At the time, this was one of the most personal pieces I’d written. For The i Paper, I explored how Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) destroyed my life — from the daily realities of pain and panic attacks to the longer-term costs of strained friendships, and missed opportunities. I interviewed doctors and advocates, and shared my own trial-and-error route from antidepressants and oral contraceptives to the possibility of early menopause. It was the first time I’d written publicly about PMDD and it felt uncomfortable but necessary in a world where medicine is still mired in misogyny.

This was my fourth byline as a travel journalist for the South China Morning Post, reporting from Glasgow’s Barras as it hosted its first Hong Kong Market. I spoke with vendors and volunteers — many recent arrivals via the BNO visa — about food, identity and life after migration. As a Glasgow-based travel writer, I was struck by how the city welcomed the unfamiliar: street snacks, Cantonese opera, even open-air massages. The event drew more than 3,000 visitors and the food sold out within hours — a hopeful sign of life in the once-moribund Barras.

The day first minister Nicola Sturgeon resigned, The Times found themselves in need of a Scottish travel writer for this fun, newsy piece — and I was happy to oblige. I imagined where she might go on her first proper holiday, exploring six travel destinations with political or cultural links to Scotland. I wrote it overnight and filed it the next morning, which was a new and interesting challenge for me. From whisky in Taiwan to fish and chips in the "Scottish town" of Barga, Italy, I balanced humour with Scotland travel writing insights and the former First Minister's legacy.

This was my first piece for The Times and my debut as a Philippines travel writer in a UK national. I returned after five years away, landing in Manila just as pandemic travel rules began to ease. I explored Intramuros by bamboo bike, rode an ATV across Mayon’s lava fields, and stayed in a family-run guesthouse in Bicol. The piece was praised for its balance of personal narrative with detailed Philippines travel writing, winning Silver in the AITO Travel Writer of the Year Awards 2022–2023 for articles under 1,500 words.
